THE MOMENT

Before David was a king, and before he faced Goliath, he was a shepherd (and that wasn't a gentle job). Shepherds stayed with their flocks, watched over them at night, led them to what they needed, and protected them from danger.  David tells of going after lions and bears that attacked his father's sheep. In fact, when preparing to face Goliath, this was the experience he pointed to.  A shepherd wasn't simply someone who cared for sheep, a shepherd was willing to fight for the flock.

LOOK CLOSER

The word translated “want” comes from the Hebrew chaser.  It means to lack, be missing, or be in need.  So this isn't about no longer wanting things.  It's closer to: “I will not lack what I need.”

IF SOMEONE ASKS…

You don't need a perfect explanation. Maybe this verse matters to you because…

  • You love that a shepherd wasn't just gentle - a shepherd stayed, protected, provided, and fought for the flock.
  • You need the reminder that being cared for doesn't always mean being kept away from hard things.
  • “I shall not want” means something different to you knowing it's about not lacking what you need, not getting everything you want.
  • There's something powerful about David choosing shepherd to describe God when he knew firsthand how fiercely a shepherd protected what was in his care.
  • Sometimes you simply want to carry the reminder: I am cared for.

Or maybe your reason is entirely your own.

THE VERSE
